Thoughts on commenting on other videos?

To be honest, it's less likely to bring any traffic to our channel. The good point is if your comment is ranked high in the popular videos, people will engage with you in those comments, but the sad point is they don't bother checking out others content.
On the other side, if you constantly comment on the YouTubers around 500-1000 subs, there is a chance that they will check out your channel and may promote you.

I don´t see it this negativly. Obviously it depends on the channels you are commenting on. Big Youtubers : A lot of exposure, but a small chance these people will actually check you out. A small channel who answers to all the comments (1-1000 Subs, maybe more, depends on how busy the comment section is) has a good probability to check you out. If you are a regular commentor other regular viewers will notice you (maybe the channel even answers with : I like your new video Hendrik, making it clear that you also produce content). And the creators of smaller channels will probably check you out if you watch them regulary and comment a lot of usefull stuff.

The best part : The most effective way is the honest way ! If you honestly watch other youtubers content because you are interested (photography channels in this case) theres a good chance they are intrested in yours (and their viewers). If you then comment like " Nice photoshoot - i always do my shoots for videos like this ....", add value and are nice you have an excellent chance of somebody who is your target audience checking you out.

Algorithmically nothing.
Traffic wise, you might get 0.1% traffic flow. I emphasize might. It will likely be low retention.
From Yt's perceptive, comments and likes exist to increase viewer engagement and promote the development of fans. If fans feel engaged, they might watch more and more often. That will be reflected in views and retention.
If you truly enjoy the other channel and their content, by all means participate in the comments. Natural interactions without expectations will attract other like minded people and build relationships.
The other side is commenting as part of a s4s strategy. This can get you into a s4s loop where everyone subs and comments. Some loops are made of a few dozen channels, some hundreds. This is fine, as long as you are aware of the benefits and drawbacks of the strategy.

In my opinion it works well. I've started commenting more on YouTube videos and I gained 150+ subs in the last two months commenting. Also not in a spammy "Sub to me for good luck" type of comments, but a genuine comment that usually gets top comment. If I ever get top comment on a popular video, people sometimes check my channel out, watch my videos, and sub.

Great, I appreciate everyone's responses. I think I will try to engage more on other YouTubers with the same interests and I will let you know if I had any luck regarding traffic to my channel.

I also think genuine comments are much better and should be the only type of comments.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I've never really had any luck with commenting, I know a lot of people say networking through Youtube is encouraged but certain comments will get called spam, I've even had people complaining about me leaving comments that simply say "Hey, great video!"

you should simply comment to comment; no ulterior motives. people can smell spam easily; not saying you but as an example. be genuine with real comments and you may get people to check out your channel. good karma I would say.

Honestly I don't thing so.It depends on your comment type like if you comment something spammy like "Just hited...","I'm close to..." you may find some people who want to do Sub4Sub.But if you're comment honestly,if you are giving your true opinion it's don't raise your traffic. But sometime if you comment on a video maybe someone like your profile pic give you a checkout, subscribe if he/she enjoyed your content. So that's the thing :)
