Download GIMP!! Its a free version of Photoshop!!! You won't beable to do everything PS can do but for a banner it will do you fine!!

Pixlr.com is a life saver free version of photoshop. just create an image the size you need for your banner and go to town.

Are there any basic walkthroughs, not templates, just to get me started? Or have they already posted them in forums, I'm sorry if I'm being annoying or redundant. I'm just not sure I "get" rebranding, channel art, etc

Use some software called InkScape, Its really simple to use. There is a tutorial on how to install on my channel.
