The fonts you use could get you in trouble.

Many probably aren't aware of this so I'll throw this up. I received a letter from a font creator this morning stating that I was using it for a commercial purpose (YouTube) and he wanted to see the license for it. If not, I should either buy one or discontinue using or I was open to the possibility of being sued.

I wasn't aware this was a thing, although I should have been. I simply downloaded a few fonts from a website called "Da Font", did not read the "Read Me" files and started using them in my videos.

Hopefully I can resolve this with the author by buying the license to use commercially. Anyone out there using custom fonts should check the site for documentation they are downloading them from. The one I used says "Free for Personal Use. For Commercial Use Contact:".

I guess anyone can be targeted using a font on a monetized platform to either (a) being urged to buy a license, (b) threatened with legal action or (c) Youtube Copyright Take Downs.

Yeah man, when you download from DaFont, always click More options and tick 100% Free*. Best of luck with your predicament.

*unless you want to pay for a license, of course.

The issue has now been resolved. I purchased the font license for life long use ($49Euros) which I should have done in the first place if I was a bit more clued on. Lesson learned! It was the legitimate creator of the font. Emails matched up with what was listed on the font site and in the Read Me file. Peace!

This doesn't happen that much with small creators, but as soon as you start growing your channel and audience up, get ready for this. I recommend downloading OpenSource fonts from Google Fonts database... or you can use other sites, just be sure to check Commercial Free / OpenSource / CC0 Fonts and download - you should still check out the readme.txt files, some websites have fonts ordered incorrectly, but the font creator won't accept that as an excuse.

Yeah that's how copyright works. Anytime you're using something created by someone else you should be looking for any licensing information. Whether it's a font, picture, sound effect, music, video, video effect, graphic, textures and even filters for editing software.
