The Copyright On Covers On YouTube?

Hey!

I want to start doing music on my channel - I have written my own songs, but I might want to start out by doing covers to get used to it, before uploading my own songs. The problem with this, is I have no idea what the copyright is with this? I really don't want copyright strikes or anything, because my account is is very good standing with this. I also just don't want any hassle, and I know I could attempt to put my own songs up if I can't do any covers at all. But are there any basic rules or is it very complicated when doing covers? If it helps I don't put ads on my videos, and do not get paid in any way. And I would be playing guitar as the music and singing, so I wouldn't be using any backing tracks.

If you have any questions, please ask :)

Thanks for all your help

Not sure how it works.. I believe as long as you don't monetize the video you should be ok.. I have never done a cover for this reason.. only post originals when we do do songs.

I don't think there should be any copyright problem with cover songs, many of the you-tubers do acoustic cover songs, there is no copyright for them!

Hi, I have made many searchestrying to protect my youtube account as many small or large companies was making false claim using youtube system (with or with out bot/softwares). I have come to solution that some big channel on youtube have they own layers.
I THINK is the best to talk to your layers and tell them i want to start a channel on youtube about music and i am trying to reach as many fans/subscribers as i can with out getting third party match or copyright in my channel by sometinme uknown users making false claims and how can i secure my channel. I believe there are layers who does issue a copyright letter/staitment on your behalf about your channel so when you recieve something from youtube you can show that letter/staitment to youtube it self and i bet u they will release the claim whoever is making that claim.

Th point here is to protect your channel in long term and to secure no one will falsy claim in your channel something they dont own it. There are YouTube users/Publishers who their account was banned because they did not know how to protect it and got so many false claims that they lost the account and it's so frustrating to work hard for year or to in the end your channel goes off youtube for a secend, it just not fair. I suggest you try that beacsue when ever you despute a claim with your proof the other party will see that and trust they will have to worry about facing the law for making false claims to yourr music/videos.

I knwo this way you will continue to work on your videos and your channel with out worring that one day your channel will disappear because of other law breakers out there.

I wish you good luck and all the best to you :)

Hi Clarie,

YouTube recently allows most covers to share in revenue. This means once the cover you upload gets tagged and you are notified of a Copyright Claim you might be able to select to share in revenue with the original copyright owners. This isn't for every song and to be honest there isn't a list of songs to help you. If your video is removed you will get a copyright strike.

Feel free to email me offbeatbryce@gmail.com if you have anymore questions. YouTube copyright system always changes and I am generally in the loop of everything to do with that. Basically YouTube has deals with music companies. Your video will only be taken down and given a strike with the artist or copyright owners tell YouTube they don't want it available anymore.

I would advise you that if you get your first copyright strike you should then not upload anymore covers. It seems to be rare that it happens anymore with cover songs.

Yes you need a license to do covers. There is actually two different copyright involved. The record labels own the actual sound recording of the performers. While the performers own the copyright to the words and musical arrangement.

If you do a cover you are going to need a performance rights license. See the link below. It's a good place to start.

Not true. The song writers still own copyrights to words of the songs. You do need a license for covers.

Then refer to the article Google Posted on YouTube's site that says you can monetize covers.

You do not need a license for YouTube. YouTube pays for it. They have been since 2011. Look up Harry Fox Agency and got to their site and look for the YouTube FAQ. It explains License are paid already. Call Universal, Sony, Warner. They all tell me you don't need a license and post articles on their sites saying this.[DOUBLEPOST=1425699275][/DOUBLEPOST]
