The 30% rule regarding comedy

I was listening to an interview NPR did with writer and director Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters) and he gave an interesting insight regarding comedy:

On the market research surveys they do with recruited audiences to test movies, the audience is ask to check an adjective that describes the movie. And they're given a list and funny is on the list. And when a comedy has 30 percent of the people checking funny, it's considered that's the norm. So you know, 30 percent - that's three out of 10 people thinking it's funny. It's not a lot.

This just reinforces the idea that you can't please everybody. And when it comes to comedy — 3 out of 10 is good enough.

Makes sense and I dare say applies to any form of art. Anyone trying to please everyone is just going to wind up with the most generic "meh" looking creation the world has ever seen.
