Testing the waters with 360 degree video...

Taking over the world... ...one kid at a time!
We did our first 360 degree video, it has been a learning experience. It is weird to have "nowhere to hide" as the camera man! It is not naturally easy to think in terms of a 360 degree view after years and years of watching and making "flat" video and images! Also you have to do additional steps in the editing/post to get the video to look right on YouTube.

We did a basic "here's my room" tour, which I think suits itself well to the 360 view for the most part, although when showing things of smaller detail, you have to bring them closer to the camera since it uses two fisheye lenses. So far our audience seems excited by it, although a few have complained about it. I get it, not everyone likes to have to look around when watching video.

Has anyone else tried using a 360 camera yet? Do you think you might try it some day? What are your opinions on the 360 video experience? And what kinds of content would you like to see in 360 video? I'd like to hear from you!

Personally I think it's awesome. The future of technology is virtual reality which really takes advantage of 360 degree cameras. If I watched your video in my friend's VR device I'd probably feel like I was in that room literally. I predict in 5-8 years it'll become a part of every household. So you could be one of the pioneers :)

I've moved this to the video editing, recording, software and hardware forum. ^^

Neat! I didn't know they had 360 cameras out yet! What is it like editing the footage?? Something like that would look cool at the top of a mountain after a hike. ^-^

I'm using the Gear 360 ActionDirector program that Samsung gives you for free with their 360 camera. The editing is a little limited, you can put in some titles and background music. To get the videos to work on YouTube in full 360 you have to download something called a metadata injector but that's explained on the Google help site pretty well.

Whoa, this makes me wonder what video editing/viewing is going to look like in the next 10 years! I wonder if we'll have computer goggles where we can view the recorded video in a virtual-reality kind of mode. I can imagine watching a movie where we might have to physically turn around to see what is happening in the recorded clip.

Or maybe with gestures like that scene in Minority Report...not quite VR though.
I want a monitor that big for work! And a computer that can have that many programs opened at once! xD I already try to have that many programs opened at the same time, and often pay the consequences.... :p Between crazy things like wii controllers and touch screens, I don't think that's too far from reality! It would be cool to swivel the video around with a touch screen! ^_^

I bought a Ricoh 360 camera at VidCon. Shot a short clip outside of VidCon and uploaded it.
Lets just say I was disappointed. It could be fun for somethings but it has a ways to go. Still need to try FaceBook and see how that works. Apparently 360 pictures on FB work really good. Will try when I go to times square soon.

The stitching is pretty good.

Since you're using 360, you shouldn't have moved the camera. Otherwise, why are you shooting in 360 =)

I use a Kodak PixPro 360 4K. I haven't done any special presentations with it but rather, just doing vlogs to let people sneak peaks around my warehouse.

I did 9 videos there but I have moved into a bigger location. I haven't done any 360 videos from the new place yet.

Yeah, it was a bit of a learning experience! I just shot another one and this time I only moved the camera to get it closer to objects in the background, and did cuts rather than moving the camera while it was recording. Also I got the quality settings a lot better this time!

That's a nice collection of 360 videos you've made there, Mark! Perfect for showing off the warehouse.
