Technical help needed asap.

Hi guys, I've been trying to sort this for the past couple of hours and i have no clue what to do;

I'm trying to set up a headset for recording my voice audio as the internal mic on my computer is really bad. when trying to set up the mic for recording, the mic isn't picking up any sound yet strangely enough sounds are being picked up through the earphones. (if i tap, or talk into the actual earphones sound is picked up.)

Any idea how i fix this so it works as it should?

My OS is Vista and my headset is a fairly basic Tritton. there is no dedicated pc input wire so I disconnected all other wires for console gaming etc and have it connected via the "male" analogue input wire from the headset to the laptops mic input.

Any help you guys can give would be amazing. If i use the cheap little call centre mic i can get it to work. audio isn't very clear normally but i've been able to clean it up using audacity.

Well when you're recording your audio you can use Audacity to remove any kind of background noise if done properly. I think the best person who could help you out if you still want it is @Tarmack

Thanks, I'll probably speak to him later if I can. Going to work in about 30 mins, I'll do some recording with the current setup when I get back later and see how it turns out. If I'm still having issues I'll get in touch.

Speakers and microphones are essentially the same mechanical design but with reversed purpose and optimization. Speakers will capture sound and record like a microphone, they're just not ideal for the job. So when you plug your headphones into a mic port, that's the result. Generally speaking, headphones with a mic input will have 2 cables, one for the speaker jack, the other for the mic or line-in. See signature for the standard cleanup process that I use.
