Suggested all of the sudden

Hi! I had about 3k subscribers up until one day I woke up to see a thousand more and a bunch of activity, almost entirely on my latest video. In the week since then, I've been getting several thousand subs a day and that video has about 300k views (more than any others on my channel). Analytics shows it's all coming from suggested video and browse features.

Is this a tipping point where YouTube now "likes" my channel and it will grow by itself from now on or was this video just particularly popular with the algorithm and I'll be back to no views in future videos?

That's great news, congratulations! If this is still the first week, give it some time. Some videos do lose steam after that first week. Every once in a while though one sticks around, so hopefully that's what's happening.

In other words, YouTube likes the video but not necessarily the channel and probably won't give future videos any special treatment?

That helps the other videos get suggested when people are watching one of your videos.
 
I think a lot depends on your next video. It seems you don't upload very frequently so it is hard to say if there's going to be any momentum. I'm guessing your next video will get significant suggested video spots based on your latest (and best performing) video, but if the new one doesn't get as many clicks, the algorithm may cool off a bit.

Makes sense. Is there anything I should look for in determining what made this video get so well suggested? I think the like/dislike ratio, retention, etc. were pretty similar to other videos before it took off.
 
The title is a real clickbait. Conflict brings about views like nothing else. Plus, its a topic that is really popular right now. Look at the trending and top searches and find something that incorporates them. For example, right now you could make a video about the hurricane or about donald trump. Donald trump would be a popular one because he's always searched and will be continuously searched for awhile to come. and its political like this video, so it would likely appeal to your audience.[DOUBLEPOST=1503892101,1503891951][/DOUBLEPOST]A topic i want to see done by you is "houston knew it was going to flood, but it didn't evacuate" and maybe explain that and the topic of natural disasters and evacuation
 
I would probably enjoy the ride and be happy that a video would get suggested.
Did it have better quality than the other videos, or was it the same as the others? Was it on a trending topic? All i´m asking is the video different compared to your other videos?
 
When I hit 2000 subs, YouTube began cherrypicking a few videos on my channel to start suggesting. What I'm noticing is more and more of that as I release more videos. I think at some point (not necessarily 2000 subs), YouTube begins experimenting with your channel to see if your videos gain any traction. Be happy that it's happening and just keep creating content. Don't overthink it too much, give every video a chance by checking all the boxes (tags, title, description, thumbnail, etc) and here and there YouTube will suggest some over others.

I'd check your analytics and see what traffic sources are driving the views: is it linked to another successful video, or is it just a search term, or was it embedded somewhere? That should help you figure out how to position your next video.
