Steady Cams

Has anyone tried a steady cam? I bought one but regret it. I think's a cheap knock off. For those who don't know what a steadicam is, it's a piece of equipment that smooths out the shake of the camera while your walking. I know I wasn't expecting miracles with this one because they can get into the $10k and I bought mine for $80AU. What happens with mine is that when I stop or change direction it falls back the the other way and starts to wobble. here's a diagram of the thing

Has anyone used a steadicam? any recommendations?

Cameras are very ugly in general so nothing lost there... That device doesn't look very high-tech at all, just a simple counterweight on a ball joint. I don't know how the top end stuff works but I imagine it gets pretty complicated with gyroscopes and what not - this is more like a stabiliser you'd find on an archery bow to reduce shaking. They are expensive too but it's more about quality make and material than anything.

I looked into this a lot before. It's hard to get the cool flying effect unless you spend the money on something like one of the glidecam models that are $500+

I bought one and I don't know whether it's just because I don't have the balance right or whatever but I also have problems with it and got mine for £80 and because I've got no use out of it I do feel some regret

Haha when I was first getting into filming, i.e. when I had absolutely no money, I was filming a skateboard video with some friends. But I didn't want it to look like all the other countless skate vids, so I came up with this mad contraption that was essentially just suspended pulleys. All made from nothing but string, Lego, cardboard tubes and duct tape.It looked absolutely ridiculous, but it gave a fantastic shot!

Engineering/ ghetto filmmaking at its finest :p
