Some channel/network questions

Cognitive Overdose

I Love YTtalk
So I've been thinking about starting a second channel to do other content but I've noticed that some Youtubers are able to combine their channels so that it acts as one? (Such as a network of sorts?) In CGP Grey's channel you can see it under the about section https://www.youtube.com/user/CGPGrey .
How does a Youtuber go about doing this?

Once I have a second channel will I be able to partner it with one of the bigger networks without effecting the first channel or will partnering take into account all the channels I own?

Hope my questions were clear enough. Thanks!

Large YouTuber's (and brands) have access to the YouTube CMS which allows them to claim (or as you put it "combine") and manage their channels. By claiming a channel with a CMS, it thereby makes it impossible for network to claim the channels until they are released (so if you wanted to partner with a network, your channel would need to be released first). Claiming your channel through your own CMS account will have no effect on your ability to partner with Adsense.

To apply for a YouTube CMS account, you need to reach 15,000 hours of watchtime in a period of 90 days to be eligible to email YouTube's support team. Once you can do that, ask for an application.
