Snowball Mic

So I got everything I wanted for Christmas, A laptop, snowball mic, mouse, cooling pad, etc. So my question is, how close do you keep your snowball? I have the mic capture volume all the way up and its about a foot infront of me maybe less.
 
I have mine about a foot and a half away for my gaming commentaries. When I have it set to -10dB i'm about 6-8inches away.

like 3 meters away from me, this thing picks up like a motherfucker. Which setting do you have it one? there are 3 ticks on the back.

The first is the Cardiod capsule, it's good for speech, vocals, and podcasting. The second actives the cardioid capsule with a -10dB PAD, this is good for live music, and loud sound sources. The third actives the omni capsule, which is good for conferences, interviews, and enviromental recordings.
