Which is the best way to keep the mic. Should I keep it close or far away from my face.

It depends what kind of mic you have, if it's a shorgun mic all you need is to point it in the direction of sound. If it's omnidirectional you should experiment what sounds best, try to record at the highest volume you can (if it doesn't muffle) so that you don't have to amplify in post getting white noise

Put the mic into your mouth and talk with your mouth closed, that's a good way to reduce echo...

I am using a basic Audio Technica condenser mic. Being a condenser mic, it picks up voices closer to it more properly. So talk very close to the mic while voice recording.
