Should I have pulled this video down?

Patrick Harris

You see what I did there?
I recently did a video in tribute to my "girl" Asia. It used copyrighted music, and while YouTube told me it wouldn't effect my standing with my account, I found that the video was not view able on mobile devices. Also, now that my channel is beginning to grow a bit, I didn't want to run the risk of YouTube and Google using it against me when its time for a partnership.

The video can still be seen on my Facebook fanpage here (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151202882440739&set=vb.177168059005025&type=2&theater)

My question is, did I do the right thing by pulling this video down? Or do you guys think it would have been okay to leave on YouTube? Essentially, I did enjoy being able to get views and comments on it from YT, but not at the expense of never being able to make partner

I havent seen it but I believe you made a good decision, I am quite sure 1 copyright strike means no external partnership in the future.

Honestly, I've seen plenty of people become partners even if they have copyrighted stuff like music in the background.

Maybe after I become partner I can push my luck like that. Until then, I don't want to give YouTube or Google any excuses

At no point you had risk anything. That mentioned Not viewable on mobile Devices sounds more like the Copyright Owner of that Song has set it up that Way and while you wouldn`t be able to monetize that Trailer on your own it wouldn`t change your Standing at all.

I have a similar Case with Sony Music Entertainment and all I did was to reach out and discuss that topic with them until we came to an agreement and now everyone is fine with the result.

If you are unsure about something your first step should be always to reach out to the Copyright Owner. Often they will tell you that you can`t Monetize that Trailer because you are using their Song/Product or you can only use it if you pay them something.

Sometimes, not very often, they will take a look at your YouTube Channel and tell that you can use it/Monetize it since they are cool with it....

I guess it always depends on your outward appearance:

If you try to rip them off they will pretty fast start to ignore you and keep playing business as usual. If you play instead with open cards right from the beginning and explain them what you are up to they will for sure offer you something which might be even better then getting nothing at all if they are open for new ideas (If Money is involved most are it!).
