Running a Competition from your Channel

Hey all, my wife sort of gave me this idea. I don't know if anyone here has done it before and how it worked out. Even if it's feasible at all.

Has anyone ever run a competition from their channel, for example if you subscribe, like drop a comment on a video you're entered into a draw to win a prize, be that software or what ever.

For example:
Subscribe, like and drop a comment on this video between now and October 31st 2012 and you'll be entered into the competition to win digital copy of Sony Vegas whatever..

Your thoughts?

Theres loads of people who do it all the time and I see no big issues doing it but there are some pros and cons that come with them.

Pros

You gain new subscribers.
Those who do subscribe just to enter who dont really watch your videos could become interested after hearing about the competition.
I think it helps to keep people interested and checking back now and then to see if there's more competitions.
Your subscribers would feel rewarded and it shows your generosity.

Cons

People could easily unsubscribe after the competition if they win or if they dont.
Some people see it as a way of getting subscribers who dont care about the videos you make and only sub just for the competition.
You could possibly lose a few as there are people who dont believe in holding comps etc

Theres probably more for both but I cant think of more of them right now.

I honestly think you should go for it if you think it will help your channel but I wouldnt start with such a big prize like Sony Vegas, maybe give away something new and unwanted that others could use and perhaps run them every now and then, oh that reminds me I know of one YouTuber who would do competitions when she started out every month or so and that was how she built her audience and traffic mostly (she did spam a hell of a lot too though lol) the issue with her doing this though is her most popular videos were the giveaways and competitions, it was like peoples interest was only really peaking when there was something to win which is kinda sad.

The thought of people simply subbing for the competition and not the content is a worry, I hear you. That's what's deterring me. Thing is it's extremely difficult to get exposure as most everyone knows. I'll will ponder on this idea and wait for more tips and advice from fellow YouTubers.

i have seen people do it like ghostrobo and gamefront they have done it a few times but shouldnt be if you subscribe since you may never see them again use it to reward you returning viewers the way ghost did it was if you comment on most parts of one of his series and gamefront did it for best comment on a vid

Yeah I prefer this idea.[DOUBLEPOST=1348219984,1348219527][/DOUBLEPOST]@Micheal - Maybe something smaller like a $25 iTunes voucher or something...

I'm just trying to work out if this idea is feasible or not :)

You could try Amazon gift cards, at least with those people will get physical goods and I think people appreciate physical goods more than digital ones saying that though I am sure people would love MS points for their Xbox Live accounts :D

Thinking about all this, I think it's best to reward subscribers/comment posters then asking for subs to win a prize, I'd rather randomly select a subscriber / comment poster when I reach 100 subs as a thank you.

For example:

Thank's for the 100 sub's!
All current subscribers are eligible to win either a $25 iTunes voucher or a $25 Amazon gift card etc... bla bla!

Im doin one now called SMYM (Show Me Your Mettle) Its a Rapping contest where the rappers go thru an elmination style contest and test their skills thru the challenges me and my judges set! :D

I would think the money would be better spent in advertising. After all, how are you going to get the word out about the competition. There's no incentive for someone to tell their friends unless you make the reward for spreading the word.

You could also focus on YouTube's new priority, watch time. Perhaps you could use annotations to seed your video(s) with answers to questions that they must answer before entering via email.[DOUBLEPOST=1348239409,1348238207][/DOUBLEPOST]You might also try collaboration to get new subs and views. I have noticed that your videos do not have voices, so adding dialogue and soliciting voice talent could help you get noticed. You could do it here or I have seen people post on FreeSound.org for specific dialogue. People are more likely to spread the word about something they helped create.

I have thought about doing something similar myself.
