Question for people that used Adsense before joining a network

How much do you make compared to Adsense? After joining a network, did you start making more, less, or about the same? Also what network did you join? I know it's not always consistent and will fluctuate depending on the time of year, but just give an estimate if possible. If you can't get into specifics, just say more/less.

I'm just curious because I've been thinking of joining a network, but I'm pretty comfortable using Adsense and don't want to go through the trouble of applying, signing a contract, and severing ties with Adsense just to make less. Trying to figure it out on my own using numbers they give that are sometimes deliberately confusing just gives me a headache, so hopefully some of you can help. I'm pretty cynical, so I just assume most networks are trying to screw me.

Hello Shortbread,

It 100% depends on the network itself and the revenue share they offer you. I believe you spoke to Flammy recently who I work with. He could touch on his personal experience with increased CPM rates.

What you will find is that it is mostly dependent on the average CPM of the network per your channel size. If the network can not secure additional ad inventory than you would of course earn more with AdSense instead. The best way to handle it would be to reach out to a few networks and request CPM / revenue information. I would also advise you to ask to trial with them for a month or two so you can compare the revenue.

What is your YouTube page so I can take a look as well?

I used AdSense before joining a network. The three factors that determine your revenue are

Revenue = (Monetized Views) * (CPM) * (Network Share)

Networks automatically will reduce the amount you earn by changing the Network share from "100%" (because if you aren't in a network, you keep it all) to .5, .6, .7 or .8 approximately. These represent a network taking 50%, 40%, 30%, or 20% respectively which range from the worst to fairly good revenue shares. It can go higher than that. It is very easy to determine the revenue share you are getting is.

The second part which is much, much harder to quantify is CPM. This absolutely changes, too. However because it is flexible depending on time of year as well as demographics, it is very hard to determine even approximately what your CPM will be without asking the network - and if they say something it might not be true or might just be an over positive assumption.

The best way to try to determine what you are going to get CPM wise from a network is to talk to channels who are similar to your own: Similar content, language, audience, video length, video style, etc, etc... See if they will share info.

Finally personally...

My total revenue roughly doubled when I joined Omnia. Mostly due to the CPM increase.

I was just talking with a channel in my same niche who is in RPM and they are getting 60% of what I get on a per 1000 monetized views basis. I was talking with a channel in my same niche who is part of TGN and they were getting 30% of what I get on a per 1000 monetized views bases.... (These % are prior to network share or view count, so it should reflect relative CPMs at least within our niche.)

Some people that are in network get great CPMs like the one above me^^ but most aren't that successful :( Machinima, RPM, BBTV are some networks i've heard provide low CPM, but obviously it may vary since it depends on lot of other aspects as well. I'm good with adsense coz i have an average CPM of like 13 for all my accounts and was actually 20 last month! Not everyone is that fortunate and who knows maybe my CPM may massively drop next month...I never advice joining a network though, it's a personal choice.

I did speak with Flammy, but not about much. He asked me what my channel was, I PMed him on YouTube, and that was about it. :P

I can't post links, but I just added my channel to my profile here so I think you can click the link below now. I don't know why I didn't do it before.

It really depends. You are NOT guaranteed to earn more and you might earn less than before. The higher revenue share you get the more likely you will earn more.

Just keep that in mind along with the other helpful responses :)
