Um, aren't Elgato and Easycap actually hardware, not software? I was actually thinking of getting an Easycap to make Gamecube videos, since I have one sitting in the back of a wardrobe somewhere. For free software, I'd recommend OBS. You can use it for streaming too, and it uses the high-quality x264 codec. It needs a bit of setting up, but the tutorials and how-tos are out there.
