I realize the title alone is going to make some professionals cringe...
So i notice a few threads talking about share factory and how to upgrade to new capture cards and editing software. If you want to upgrade that is awesome, and i almost entirely suggest it. But i decided to make this thread for the real small guys like myself, and maybe it is a bit premature for me to give advice on here, but i feel like we shouldn't knock it till we try it out. I will go more in depth with my story, and just let you guys know that i am a dead beat dirt bag with crap education and very little going for me.
So I dont exactly have alot of bank to be making videos with, even saving up for a ps4 to play with my friends was a nightmare. So what is a man like me to do, just spending my "life savings" on a playstation system, instead of that fancy video editing laptop. I mean I've been wanting to make movies and gameplay videos for a long time, but also wanting to play with my close friends was important to.
When i purchased my PS4 i didn't actually know much about these new devices, and i do that with games and devices to savor the excitement and surprise. This certainly was the case as i was actually blown away by next gen graphics and the features that came with the PS4. When i discovered sharefactory and the ability to share my clips on facebook and youtube i was very enthralled. I had to give it a shot, i knew that i could create some decent videos even with basic cut and edit tools.
Even at the time i knew that sharefactory would not be the best choice for editing, but i wanted to try it out by making my first minecraft video. i went all out on it, I wanted to use as many features as i could, titles, transitions, slow motion, music. with every step i took i became more excited about what i was doing. I caught myself saying, "hey this isnt half bad, some one could use this to make content and hardly anyone could tell." And the best part about it is that "anyone" can use this software, even children could master the interface.
So maybe your a young kid, not even out of school yet, or lack the bank for fancy editing materials. Your parents maybe got you that PS4 for your birthday or christmas, or maybe your like me and are just poor. either way if you have a desire to do youtube, and have access to sharefactory and a PS4, you may just get your start. Especially if you are new to editing, this would be a great program to practise the basics of video editing. Younger children starting on this will be masters of adobe and other things by the time they are 12, so get your kids involved, making videos it is good fun!
So what advice can i give to gameplay tubers, who only have a PS4, and no money for new hardware and software. I find my videos, with some more practise will be almost on par with some of my favorite youtubers, not as good of quality, but the content shows. but there are some short comings that you need to be super aware of and how to combat these short comings. There are 2 big issues that i can think of with share factory right off the bat, and ive mention one of them already several times. That is volume, now i am still new to this but it would seem that music and clip volume decrease dramatically after rendering your video.
When editing a video on share factory i normally have my volume at about 11-15 percent on my TV. Now there are about 3 diffrent tracks to use on sharefactory, one is your clip track. The clip track contains your gameplay footage and capture footage from in game. Track 2 is your secondary voice over/ commentary track, you can use this track to record band new voice overs on your clips. Then there is track 3 where you can insert music and other audio files, one of my favorite features with share factory. Now you can adjust the volume levels for each clip individually along with your commentary and music track, sometimes some fine tuning is needed.
Now when i edit my videos in sharefactory, the music that i collect is normally 500% louder then my game clips, so i have to reduce the music volume, i have also gotten into a habit of instantly boosting the clip audio to 200% and you will see why. Cause once i get the clip and music volume mastered to a point where its clear, and i finish my editing i begin to render my finished clip. Cause sharefactory projects, much like other project files on PC is not an actual video file and needs to render into a proper formatted video.
After rendering my finished project i am greeted by an extremely quite video, when i normally have my T.V. set to 11-15% volume. Playing back the rendered movie i need to set my T.V. at around 25-30% volume, more then double! This is not even the worst part about it, though i could be wrong about this, but the track 2 commentary does not seem to be effected by this. So while my clip and music volume is nerfed, my commentary remains loud and overzealous.
In early projects, i ran out of clips space alot because you are only allowed to have 50 clips in total in a project. So if you have a project with 25 clips, and you chop them all in half, you reach your limit right away. Not to mention other tracks (maybe not music though) also count as separate clips for each sample you record. To combat this unwanted limitation, i would edit my clips as much as i could, and then render them in parts. Then later i would take individual pieces of my movie and stick them together and re render them, Good idea right??? Wrong... Remember when i mentioned that sharefactory murders sound worse then Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis (google that). Well everytime i render the same movie, it would become half as quite as before. After only 2 renders you could imagine that my movies where mouse flicks, attracting the smallest of ears. So what does this all mean? does it mean you are limited with sharefactory? You bet you are, but not as much as you would think.
One solution like i mentioned was to raise the clip volume to 200% first thing in your project, but i will let you know now, that this does not help rendering multiple times. I think it kills volume more then 50% so the 200% boost only goes so far, besides half your movie will be much louder then the other. But right now this is one of my best solutions other then, keep it simple, keep it small. I am actually brainstorming other ideas on how to maybe get around the problem. One thing i thought of was uploading my individual parts onto youtube as private, and then editing them into one video on the youtube editing. But i have not even looked into youtube video editor, so i actually don't know if that will work. Either Way this has been kind of a brief explanation on the pro and cons to sharefactory. If anyone has any tips or suggestion or solutions let me know, and i can hopefully use that to educate people about this fun feature.
Other then that, save up for new capture card tech, or switch to P.C. Gaming, this is just to help younger people and us broke folk get a start on youtube or video editing.
