Protecting Your Channel?

I've Got It
Many of us will have spent hours, days, months, even years building up their Youtube channels. But one mis-click of a URL that leads to a virus infecting your computer, or maybe even an accidental upload of a video with some copyright material in the background may bring your channel crashing down.

I'm nine months into my Youtube 'project' (so to speak) and I'm starting to think that if things progress as they are I might be able to make something of it. But at the same time it feels so fragile and vulnerable - in an instant everything could change. The content itself I'm not too worried about because it's all backuped at 'home' but I don't feel confident in my ability to protect my channel, my brand, my subs, views, monetization account.

I've already read on here about adsense accounts being suspended and on youtube forums themselves many account of people channels suddenly being suspended. Often these stories are from a year or two ago so has Youtube got any better in this regard.

Also does strength in numbers helps? Does partnering up with youtube or other partners 'protect' you in anyway? As of now I'm still going it alone in terms of all this so I don't know where I stand if something were to go wrong with my account. It's almost as if leave my bike chained up in the city centre every Saturday and just hope it's still there when I come back to use it again.

So the question is what can you do to protect your channel beyond your password? Can you and how do you protect and, if possible, backup your channel? And how 'binary' and 'persuasive' are Youtube themselves to 'mistakes' - for example I often use music in my videos and I am happy for them to be 3rd party-matched and happy for youtube to stick adverts over them but how on earth can I tell when I might cross the line, and how bad would the punishment be?

Hopefully we can start a useful conversation with opinions and advice (unless this topic has already come up and I've missed it)

your channel can be easily protected if you take the right precautions, for instance:

1. don't monetize until you are partner(too avoid being click bombed, plus the revenue from vids before worthy of partnership status is minuscule and not worth the risk)
2. Have a good virus scan to stop viruses and key-loggers(I recommend Avast if you don't know which are good, and it's free :D)
3. YouTube will always either warn you or just remove that single video if you have a serious copyright strike, they only close channels for multiple strikes.(also on this note, it is really hard to get partnered with 3rd party copyrights on your videos as you can't legally monetize them)
4. Always back up your videos, at least for a month or two after release in case something goes wrong.

if you follow these steps, for the most part, your channel will be safe.

hope this helped in some way :)

Hey i got hacked basically a guy was jealous of my channel he found out my email then next day evrything was gone dont give to much info js this was no help but lol

To answer your questions:

1. I already monetize my videos and get around 5k views a day (150k a month) so I do make some money from them with potential to earn more.
2. Of course I have virus scanners but you can never be protected against everything all the time 24/7. You can't say to me you've never had 'something' turn up on your computer. You can do all you can to prevent the 'cause', I more concerned with managing the 'effect'
3. I once uploaded a video about an app with showed premier league football for 20 seconds, I didn't even realise I was doing something that might be considered copyright infringement. It wasn't a strike but it got a red marking and the video was banned. Obviously I deleted it and then edited it appropriate but that error could have cost me a whole lot more. I have already been offered partnership by some sites and 80-90% of my videos are my own content. But occasionally I like to do showpiece videos or mashups that do tickle copyright but are just 3rd party matched and I don't expect nor want them to be monetized, I just general exposure from my channel of them.
4. Backing up videos is a given and that's easy to do because you're in complete control of your own files.

it seems you've got your channel protected to the best of my knowledge then :D maybe some of the other tubers here will have some more tips but i gots nothing xD

I dont understand why people say dont monetize your videos? If you know its all legal why not monetize it ? even if is only 2 bucks a day thats 2 bucks more than I had.

I agree with you but people say it's not worth the risk of getting your Adsense disabled forever for only $2 a day.

there's a risk some vindictive little pr*ck will just spam click your ads in which case adsense will think you're trying to cheat them out of money and will ban your adsense account, however once you're partnered they tend to look into it more closely to see if it really is you or not :)

I think ill be fine Iv had adsense account for 2+years and run it on about 5 websites one of them getting about 1 million hits and two youtube channels so i don't think they will take it away
