Promotional Strategy Ideas

Hey guys! I've recently had some issues with my promotional strategy and I thought it would be a good idea for us to start a discussion on what we've tried and where we've succeeded or failed. I'd like this discussion to help those of us who are starting at square one. Too often I find that people advise me to promote on Twitter and Facebook when I don't have a following on either. It seems like you have to promote your Twitter so you can promote your Facebook so you can promote your YouTube. I was hoping people with more of a following could give us some tips on where to begin and how to go from zero to our first 100 subs.

I'll start things off with what I've been doing and how its been working. For the past 6-8 months, I've been on a schedule of releasing every other Friday (I do music videos and it takes a bit of time to write, record, and film one). For my first few videos, I posted on Reddit. Each time I did my videos got more views than the last (maxing out around 200 views). At that point, I made a Twitter page for myself and began trying to gain a following on that. I found this to be really easy since you can find accounts related to yours and then follow all of their followers (unfollowing all the ones who don't follow back). In a few weeks, I had about 450 followers on my Twitter. I've been diligent in posting regularly there with content that isn't all music promotion to try and engage fans. Then things went downhill. I was used to getting about 50-100 views on my video the day of release, but the last one I made only got 5. The problem was that Reddit was no longer displaying my videos on their pages. Since I posted them to the same subs every other week, Mods marked me as spam (despite being OC?) and I can no longer post content on the subs for my genre. Quite a shock to me especially because I have no idea what else to do. I decided to expand things to Facebook, making a page for myself and promoting on groups related to mine with, unfortunately, little success.

Well, thats where I am. It would be great to hear a few other people's stories and see where things went right and wrong for them. This could be something we all benefit from!

Yeah, Reddit is usually pretty tough. I think actually engaging with people on Twitter and letting them know you are a real person and not just a page to follow helps. I've found that if people follow me but I don't talk with them or anything, I get less views than when I do. Interaction is always key :)

Social media promoting is (for most people) like grinding. You need to put some effort into it and you gain some views and sometimes even subscribers. But those numbers are usually very low.

I don't have a real strategy, I just do things when I feel like. And more than often I really don't feel like wasting time on social media promotion.

What did work for me:
4Chan. Just randomly put some threads so now and then. You get some easy views till your thread will be pushed into the 4Chan Abyss....
Facebook Fan Page: Although not much but I have some followers on my artist page. Usually some of them do want to watch my new released videos.
Facebook Groups: Spamming in Facebook groups is an effective way to bring your content to other people. Spam your stuff in the relevant groups and gain some views with just a few clicks with your mouse.
Twitter: Twitter is just stupid and awful. Sharing your stuff via Twitter has a very low ROI for me. Nobody reads your stuff and even your followers doesn't care about your tweets. Nobody cares about tweets in general, is my feeling. What does help? Spam random people by mentioning then in a tweet. Usually people are more likely to click your video. Even though that's really grindy, for me it's the most effective way in Twitter.
Reddit: You need to find your way around it. You need some time to become accepted member of certain subreddits. I don't like spending time on that, so I just put my videos on there, whether they like it or not. I care less.

It's an good idea. Usually I don't have time for that, so I don't do it. But in general this is a good tip.

Heres just an update for everyone: Reddit shadowbanned me for self promotion so I decided to switch to using social media. I came up with a daily schedule of the best times to post things and have stuck to it religiously. It involves posting and interacting with people on facebook, twitter, soundcloud, and google + every day with outreach to followers to encourage them to move to other platforms as well. Also, I expanded my channel in that I am now writing blog posts that review different instruments that I have with a music video embedded as a soundclip.

With this technique, I had better success than I ever did with Reddit. My total views may be a little down, but the engagement of those views is way up. View duration, likes, and subscriber counts have gone up tremendously (on the scale that I am). If anyone is interested I'd be happy to share the detailed plan of what I'm doing.
