Problems Making A Channel Banner

I'm trying to make a new banner for my channel, however every time I save it the file size is too large. I don't understand why. I'm using Photoshop CS6 and I downloaded and used the template that @Shane made. All that is in the project is one background picture and one thing of text, thats it. I am also doing the whole "Save For Web - PNG24" thing as well. Can anyone help me?

I've found that exporting as a jpeg really nocks down your clarity in your picture.

The maximum size for a banner is 2MB, so if your png 24 is over that, you don't have a choice but to use a jpeg.

I save as png-24 all the time without a issue, most of the time. When your saving for web, which top tab are you on, original or optimized?

I really do suggest you use jpeg if it is a channel art.
Other vice it is a huge chance the size will to great for the page.

make the top and bottom that is not visible all black as its just creating memory.

Before cutting off top and bottom just check if saving it as JPEG at high quality will make a difference. As long as there isn't extreme contrast differences, you should get a low enough file size without losing too much quality.
