Playing music on your phone

If it's a copywrited song and you play a short clip of it on your phone/iPod on your video is this allowed?

So what would happen? Would my channel be taken down

No it wouldn't at all, what would happen is that you wouldn't be able to monetise the video, for most artists you can still use the track without to much hassle!

In major cases the video may be taken down by youtube due to copywriter claims.

If its under 10 or 5 seconds? I always forget but yeah if its short enough, it should be fine

If not being able to monetise is an issue then you may need to take it down; I've got quite a few (I was aware of the copyright) where I've just accepted the claim and the video is allowed to stay - helpful in music-based games!

If you're putting up videos with claimed music, it won't really go against your channel, as such (I have about seven videos online and viewable but still claimed); but as mentioned previously, some videos aren't allowed to be played in certain territories, even if you accept the copyright claim.

In this current version of YouTube, they tend to claim copyrighted-music immediately and allow you to still show it, although you don't make anything from it.

Depending on the circumstances it could be considered fair use. (Also depends on your country's copyright laws.)
