Paying for Channel design? (What's the point?)

I am in the process of preparing my channel for launch (I'm shooting for next week), and I have seen services where you can pay people to "design your channel."

They all typically need the same things; pictures, logos, info about your channel, etc...

But I must be missing something, because I don't see what kind of designing they can do. It's not like a Myspace page, or something. It doesn't seem there is much room for creativity/customization.

When I view my channel homepage and edit it, I only see options for changing the banner picture and adding/deleting text. There doesn't seem to be any way to customize anything (beyond your own photos), which anyone should be able to do on their own.

So, what can these designers do that I can't easily do myself?

Is there some editing option that I'm not seeing?

Thanks

Its normally based around branding and graphic design. I personally learnt photoshop and did it all myself however some people don't have the time or don't want to create their own banners and logos so they pay a designer :)

I have paid 3 different people (one from fiverr, one from peopleperhour, and one from here) and 2 were crap and the 3rd just took the money and ran..
Soo i think the best option is to do it yourself.

I suppose it's similar to asking why you would pay for an interior decorator when you can design and decorate rooms in your house yourself. Yes, you can do it yourself but asking someone who knows about graphics to help you might result in something cooler than you imagined or were able to achieve given your own expertise.

Of course they're not necessarily better because they charge people and for basic designs it's very likely you can create the same thing yourself so I guess it depends on your personal preferences and skills.

Branding is so important because it's the first thing a viewer sees when they check out a person's channel. If a channel doesn't look consistent, people can generally get confused at what content they're trying to represent for themselves. People who don't have access to such software like Photoshop and Illustrator, or want a consistent look for their channel but don't know where to start, pay designers to help brand them. I checked out your channel design though, your avatar and banner look great together :)

The problem was I didn't understand what exactly they would do. I understand your point completely about the interior designer, but an interior designer can move your sofa to be 15 feet a way from the TV, which he can move to be on the west side of the door, while adding in a lovely vase in the corner, etc... but a YouTube channel designer can't move anything around, right? Just make and add different pictures. And if that's the case, why not just pay an actual graphic designer and upload the pictures yourself?

I apologize if I seem to be attacking you, Kate. I'm not. You have been very helpful to me these past couple days, and I appreciate you taking the time to help me. I'm mostly just confused because I still don't see the point.

You're absolutely right. Branding is very important, and I understand that. But as far as I know, one can only upload a banner and a thumbnail size picture that goes over the banner. It seems like being consistent would be pretty easy. (Thanks for the kind words regarding my channel, by the way, despite the fact that it's devoid of any content at the moment.)

I haven't actually uploaded any public videos to my channel yet, so maybe there are some more options I'm not seeing?

Anyway, thanks again everyone for your comments. I think this community is so great and helpful. Don't worry about trying to explain it to me in more detail. I understand completely what the designer does, but I think the person calling themself a "designer" is not the most accurate title..

It's cool, I understand what you're trying to say. You're right, they can't move anything around or update for you, what they're ultimately selling is their graphic design expertise. If you're wanting a basic image for your channel look it's arguably not worth it but if you're looking for something that would require some skills in Photoshop, they might be able to provide a better quality design than if you were to attempt it yourself (depending on your own knowledge of course).

If my mum had a serious YouTube channel and she wanted a professional look, I'd recommend that she either ask me to try it or ask a designer to help her. As it is I've managed so far but she'd struggle to design something appropriate herself.

Some people dont want to or don't have the time to learn photoshop, so if they feel they can afford it why not let someone that knows what they are doing get their channel pimped up. For example i can't draw for the life of me, but i wanted a character that represented me, so i asked an artist design one for me in exchange for some moneys.

All though graphics can apear to be realitivley easy they can actually be incredible complex using extremely advanced techniques, and at the end of the day simpily not everyone can create good banners and logos and such and it does take a lot of talet dedication and passion to be incredible good at them and the reason why you should always pay a graphic designer for a good banner is because some banners can take up to 16 hours to create or even longer non stop and does it really seem fair to let someone slave over someone elses channel banner and logo for that long and not pay them for their service? its like imagine if you were a graphic designer and you were asked by a large company to design posters and standard branding things for them, and at the end of it they didnt give you anything for your work you would be pretty p****d off right to say the least, you would feel incredibly mugged off and used, it is the exact same concept but just on a lot smaller scale. hope this helped

I remember days when I was seeking for people who could do things for me. Now I do not need them, I learnt all needed abilities myself.
