Niche Markets?

Well, trial and error :) I started out doing let's plays and just gaming, but have now transitioned into making more game development tutorials - still doing some gaming, but I feel I can give more with the tutorials + I can interact better with my subscribers :P

It finds you. You start doing something you are interested in and suddenly you find yourself gravitating towards the stuff you really want to be doing on YouTube, but just didn't figure out until now.

I definitely agree. I started a 30day daily vlogging challenge just to try and find what videos I like to make. After the time is up, I'm hoping I'll have a better idea of where I want my channel to go. :)
 
I just post the videos I want to post. I have a 3rd channel (not listed below), that is aimed at a very niche market - people who want to familiarize themselves with either the Adobe Analytics or Google Analytics software. The Adobe one is really hard for people to get their hands on, so I wanted to provide some tutorials for anyone who wanted to learn the tool, without having access to it. Unsurprisingly, it's also one of my more successful channels ... it doesn't have as many sub as my vlog channel, but I earn a much higher CPM from that channel, and about 60-70% of all my YouTube income comes from that channel alone.
