New Camera? Need Suggestions

Hi Everyone!! I am looking to get a new camera for my birthday. The one I am currently using is a Toshiba Camileo - I like it because it's compact and it's got a flip out side screen that's reversible. I am looking for something of better quality - under $300 that's SLR/DSLR HD.. if possible with a reversible screen because I think it's a huge part of making videos. Anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at a Nikon J1.

Would love to know as well, been looking into getting a camera for Vlogging.

Heya! So I've got a couple questions before I can make a good recommendation.

1: How often and where are you going to use it? Does it need to be "in your pocket portable"?

2: How in depth do you want to go with it? Just talking to the camera? Or do you want to dig a bit into photography/videography?

canon t3i rebel best youtube camera and quality for the money

So many YouTubers have the Canon t3i. The quality really is just unmatched on it, however it does seem to be a little out of my price range.

1.) 3 times a week, doesn't necessarily have to be pocket portable just because I can start using the Camileo as my vlogging camera.

2.) It'd be talking to the camera and some videography. Comedy type stuff. :)

I would say there are a few options that would work well. I'll put it out there right now though, DO NO go with the Nikon J1 you mentioned. Image quality really isn't much of a step up at all from most point and shoots.

First, is the Sony NEX C3. It has a sensor that is the same size as DSLRs but the body is half the size. You can find this one used for around $350 (rarely under 300). Great clarity and low light for the price, but mainly it is a DSLR sized sensor with fast accurate auto focusing.

Next is the Canon T3i. The T3i is probably the best image quality you can get under $1000 at the moment. The main problem with the T3i is that it has no form of continuous auto focusing for live view/video. It is an incredible budget production camera, but you will have to adjust nearly everything manually to achieve good images. You can find T3i cameras for as low as $450, but they generally retail for $600.

Lastly, I would take a serious look into the NEX 5r from Sony. Honestly this is THE camera I would recommend to you as a flogger. It is BY FAR the fastest autofocusing, framerate etc. Low light is incredible and it has a topside flip up screen. Here is what makes it so awesome for vloggers though, it is WIFI enabled with an app store. You can literally upload directly from the camera to YouTube. So if you are ever just at a random cafe and want to upload some random thoughts to YT, you can do so without having to use your phone camera. This retails at $600, but again I have seen them closer to $450. It is totally worth waiting a paycheck or two. In my opinion.

Hope that helps!

One thing I always look for when buying a camera for video whether it is a cheap one or expensive is an external mic jack. Bad audio can kill a good video. I have the Kodak Zi8, decent camera but without using an external mic the sound stinks. Just my 2 cents worth for ya! My personal arsenal is a Canon Vixia HFS20, Canon T4i and the Kodak Zi8. The T4i is not good for shooting video unfortunately.
