Network Trap?

Rachael

I Love YTtalk
I don't really know what I'm doing in terms of networks and this is probably going to be really long but I would really appreciate if you could help me out if you know a lot about this. I want to find out if I actually want to do this or not before I ask my parents about it.

So basically a representative from BroadbandTV sent me an email asking me to join Outspeak. According to the email, "We are looking for digital storytellers who offer opinionated, insightful and honest perspectives on cultural, personal and world events." Here is an article about Outspeak: http://variety.com/2015/digital/news/huffington-post-outspeak-broadbandtv-1201515258/

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put the full email but they offered me potential exposure on Huffington Post, their hub channel, Outspeak, and of course a spot in BroadbandTV's lineup. I've come up with some pros, cons and questions.

Pros:
-a voice
-potential exposure to my channel
-a chance to create an original series about something I'm passionate about
-I can discover other teens like me
-being on Huffington is pretty cool :3

Cons:
-I don't know much about networks
-My channel is still very small
-The chance to be featured on Huff Po. or their hub channel might be very very slim
-Contracts get legal and involve my parents and I don't know how they would feel about that

Questions:
-Can I trust Broadband?
-Is it a lock in contract?
-Is it appropriate for me and my channel (do I really need this?)
-What can the network do for me?
-Will it cost money?
-Are they just trying to use me?
-Will it be worth my time?
-If I decide to put it on hold until I get bigger can I still come back?

Obviously if I ask them those questions they will give me the sugared version but I wanted advice from people who have had network experience. Thank you :)

-Is it a lock in contract?

I think this should be the biggest factor, especially after the horror stories I hear from MCNs. It's actually the one thing that's keeping me from joining an MCN... well... that and I'm doing fairly well on the promotion part right now anyway.

I'd say to be more focus on what the network can do for you, look at the rev share (even though you will still be missing out on a lot more either way). Pay attention to the community, and see if it's one you can get involved in, meet people, collab, and share growth. The network itself most likely will not to much for you aside from possibly give you a spot on some type of "featured channel" thing where they will show a short trailer of your channel, and tell others to go check it out.

With that will come a lot of whining from other members that they didn't get featured, and you won't get much retention from that anyway. So be absolutely sure that it's a network you want to join, even if you have a no lock-in contract, sometimes it takes awhile for them to release you.

Can you trust them? Depends on you, really. Everyone has different opinions on BroadBandTV. As for contracts, from speaking to TGN (one of BroadBandTV's networks) the standard contract is for a 60% revenue share and a 2 year term. Don't know what lock-in BroadBandTV (directly) has now. Something you'd have to ask them. But I do believe SocialBlade recently became a network with BroadBandTV and made some type of deal with them, and they now offer a 30 day trial, then a 1 year term on 70%.

As for is it worth it and if you need it, if it's worth your time - if BroadBandTV promised you, that you would get a spotlight on their channel, and on Huffington Post, etc.. make them put it in the contract. That is the only way it will really hold up, rather than them saying to you personally: "Yes, we will promote your channel on [insert places here...]", make them commit to it. If they can't do that, then they probably won't promote you on there.

That's just my two cents. Best of luck on your decision.

-Can I trust Broadband?
If you mean payment, yeah, they are quite big network and dont do payment scamming.

-Is it a lock in contract?
Yes, they do have a lock in contract. Last time I was approached by a BBTV representative, they offer me a half month contract.

-Is it appropriate for me and my channel (do I really need this?)
Depends on your channel size, your channel contents. Gaming channel? absolutely u need them. Do you need royalties free music for your production? if yes, you need them.

-What can the network do for me?
Offer you music library, thats all.

-Will it cost money?
In fact, it does. But you dont need to pay them with your wallet, you pay them with your channel revenue, thats what we called revenue share.

-Are they just trying to use me?
Using and be used, its a cycle of this world, of how business going in this day. You pay for their services, they earn money by providing services. Just like how Apple earn money from selling you the iPhone, you got the chance to use it for your own.

-Will it be worth my time?
AFAIK, you dont necessary to spend time in network, you just do some research on that network you interested, join them, and the rest is all your own.

-If I decide to put it on hold until I get bigger can I still come back?
Yes you can.
