Need some help with After Effects CS5 D:

SamaJaffa

Just some E[PIC]nglish guy
So I'm trying to use After Effects CS5 to render my gameplay and commentaries but I have some questions:

1. How can I reduce the sound of the gameplay so my voice can be heard?
2. What are the best settings for things like Sharpen and Colour correction? Or should I just leave them alone?
3. What can I do to make the preview faster? It seems to lag too much

If anyone could help me with this I would be very grateful :)

Umm... well, first of all you should not be using After Effects to do recorded video rendering. You should be using Premiere. After Effects is what people often build intros and such in. It's a visual effects program, not a video editor.

Second, for video and audio, it is ALWAYS best to record vocal (ie. mic) audio separate from the screen capture. If you're using FRAPS on a PC, then you would have Audacity or another audio program recording from your mic. This gives you a separate audio track for your voice and lets you adjust volume to your hearts content without screwing with the game volume. Same is true if you're using an HD PVR but generally requires close proximity to a PC or laptop because you'd need your mic hooked up there.

The preview always lags unless you tell it to pre-render the scene. Otherwise you're asking your computer to do it in real time, which just isn't going to happen.

- This is a task for an Editing software, AE is for VFX and Motion Graphics
- Depending on your footage, I like to use Curves tough
- Presse 0 (Zero) on your keypad to RAM Preview your footage, if it stops at some point it means you've fulled your RAM with footage, you can reduce the resolution (in your viewer panel you have Full -> Quarter -> Third..) to be able to see more of the clip in the same amount of RAM.

You can lower the sound of the gameplay video by opening the movie layer and under then open audio, then change the Decibels of the sounds to your liking.

They are correct however, After Effects is for serious motion graphics and VFX, you will have a hard time making a good edit with it.
