A different kind of normal..
I made my logo on this website: http://www8.flamingtext.com/ Also when making your logo make the background transparent if you want your background to be different (you will see what I mean when your making it!)
Then for my background I got an image of google (which is very handy!)
Also you can go on a picture editor and have fun playing around and making your backgrounds I use this one for my thumbnails and my channel art: http://www.picmonkey.com/

You can't really see it that well but it looks better on my channel!
