My Guide to Planning a New Video or Series

Do You Think Retro Games are Better to Review then New Games?

This is how I have my workflow for every single video I make:

Step 1. Pick a Game (I record all the games I play at any time just in case I do a video)

Step 2.
Watch the footage and skim through to get ideas for the script

Step 3.
Write a script that is just more of a bullet point list. I will write the particular jokes I want to say or points I want to make. The elaboration and other stuff are improvised naturally and make it sound like I have no script at all so its easy.

Step 4.
Edit all the commentary until it sounds great. (I use audacity and always use the effects Normalize, Noise Removal, Equalization, and all of that). I delete all the silence parts, the parts where I mess up a line of commentary and remove all the "uh" "ah" "um" stuff and splice it all so it sounds like I never did.

Step 5.
Toss everything in the editor listen to the commentary and split and move clips to each part so it matches up. (So the commentary comes first, I add the clips AFTER the commentary is recorded not before. Watching footage and doing live commentary is a headache for me and never comes out good)

Step 6. Make sure all the audio levels are right, make the gameplay audio slightly quieter then your commentary or however you want to do it. As long as your commentary is clear but the game audio is still able to be heard.

Step 7.
Watch the completed project and make all my minor adjustments. If there are parts in the game I forgot to add i'll add in commentary for that and the clip together then watch the final product.
Step 8. Produce the video and upload it to YouTube.

Step 9.
Type my description and tags while its uploading and then check in a separate tab to make sure the video is being ranked at all via generic search like "Night Trap Review" or whatever the video is that way I can see if I am using effective keywords and such. After all that's done you are golden and ready to make the next video!

Extra Tip: Don't worry about if the review is going to get big. Just make what you like because if you play your cards right the subject matter is irrelevant. You see famous YouTubers out there that make videos about going to the grocery store and getting 2.5 million views so nothing you can make is irrelevant.

Also. Don't release the video in a rush to get it out there. Think of every video as your "Magnum Opus" (great work) and release it when it's complete. Trust me... it's better to release a better product a day later then release a sub par one that everyone will hate. Each video you do can make or break that viewer's opinion on your stuff. So make sure it's all as good as you can get it.

If anyone has any questions for me drop me a line here as a reply or PM me on YouTube or whatever the most convenient way is for you. I'll answer any questions you all have.

Wow that's a complex workflow.

My workflow:
1) Play game and record.
2) Remove parts that seem unnecessary.
3) Render.
4) Upload.
5) Done.
6) Eat Pie.
7) Repeat-peat-peat-peat-peat.

I know it is but to me its almost automatic now. I like to make my stuff as professional as possible while keep it as entertaining as possible. Since i've done video editing and stuff of this sort for years (before I got on YouTube) the process became pretty much second nature to me. It was just something I did like brushing my teeth, you know? I mean I know it could be simpler but this method has cut off what would take 40 hours for a 10-15 minute video into a 10 hour deal. Thanks for the feedback. Take care and good luck!

I want to make some of my videos more entertaining, any idea on how I could personally do that?

Okay so I checked out a few of your review series and everything looks very clean and crisp video/audio wise. The commentary is also good and easy to understand. As for entertaining I can't really say what will "get over" better but honestly with me and my commentary I go off a script. Maybe that would help I guess like throw in a pun or something to make stuff lighthearted. Keep the videos concise but not too short. A thing I do alot and the reason why my reviews are shorter (under 15 minutes) is I try do leave absolutely no filler whatsoever because with people today (not insulting anyone btw) have a very short attention span (via why we have VINES getting popular). Therefore, I not only record my commentary at least 2-4 times for the unscripted bits and take the best parts and splice it all together to make it the best I can (I know it sounds really hard, but i'm used to it). Overall there's no real downside to your videos in general, I guess all I can say is keep things concise. Thanks for the reply, take care!

Ah this sounds so complicated, i'd never have the time for that stuff XD, my routine consists of;
  • Record Video (of a game no one has heard of or cares about because i'm stupid XD)
  • Put Video through vegas (no editing, just rendering)
  • Put rendered video through handbrake
  • upload final (and nicely compressed) video
:D
