My channel banner quality

Hey everyone! So I've been designing a new channel banner and I really like it. But the problem is, whenever I upload it onto my channel the quality looks disgusting. I use GIMP, if that matters.
Does anybody have a tip on fixing the quality of my channel banner? Thanks! :D

Hey man! As the guy above said, use .png. I don't know how GIMP works, specifically, but if there is an option to 'Save for Web', you should be able to save the file as a PNG 24, and then the file should be under 2 MB. This is how I get all of my banners to be under 2 MB.

I know that this works with Photoshop, but if you can find a similar option in GIMP, I'm sure it will work just fine there, too :)

In GIMP, when you save it as a PNG, it will ask you what compression you want on a scale of 1 to 9. Choose the lowest number you can for maximum quality that will get it just under the maximum allowed size if you see what I mean :)
