Music copyright question?

Posting Mad!
So I have heard a couple of times in various YouTube videos that you CAN use a copyrighted song WITHOUT getting a strike if you use less than 10 seconds of it? I wouldn't personally use it myself, I'm too worried about getting a strike, I'm asking more out of a general interest in the answer.

I don't see how using less than ten seconds can negate the fact that it is copyrighted. Maybe they just mean that YouTube doesn't automatically pick it up if less than ten seconds is used?

Anyone who knows anything I am interested to know :)

Myth perpetuated by people who have zero copyright knowledge. ContentID is perfectly capable of much shorter matching than 10 seconds.

it's not true people who say this use free of copyright music and don't realise it

For practical purposes there is no such thing as music that is free of copyright. The timeframe is different from country to country on when a composition becomes public domain, but most are around 75-90 years after the death of the composer.

Beyond that, every piece of music is copyrighted. What license the authors chooses to be applicable is where the variance occurs. This includes things like the Creative Commons license suite.

ContentID can identify audio samples under 10 seconds. The least I've seen is 6 seconds (making the video get claimed).
Fair use is something that is to be decided in court. Don't dispute a claim because you say "it's under 10 seconds so I can use it". If you do have a problem, email the rights holder directly (this can take a while) and try to sort it out with them.

I just go the safe route and use music from a trusted source, even some royalty free songs can get you hit as well.
