Lighting?

I'd love to get some lights, but I haven't decided whether I should get softboxes or umbrella lights. I was going to go with umbrella's because they tend to be cheeper and supposedly easier for beginners, which could be helpful since I've only used lights once (soft boxes) for a photography shoot and I had help.
Do any of you use lights? What kind? What do you recommend?

I am always too cheap to get lights. I need to get lights for lighting in my videos, but for now, I have just been using whatever I can find around my house.... worklights, lamps, natural light, etc. xD[DOUBLEPOST=1375672905,1375672772][/DOUBLEPOST]

And btw, this method of mine is not that effective, just in case you were curious lol

I have a cheap set of umbrella lighting. With them being fluorescent, they are bluish and maybe because they are cheap, but there are no light settings or dials to say how much light you need, the soft boxes are better in my opinion.

I have a set of three 500 watt work-lights that I bought from Lowes, for $10 each, and a florescent can-light. They're not the highest quality build, but the light output is more than sufficient until I can afford a better setup.

Oh yeah the little silver part? Yeah where an extra flash can go yup it just slides onto there!

soft boxes would honestly be the better way to go. sure they are a little more money. but you really get what you pay for. and you get a high quality lighting set up
