Let's play facecam. Yes or No?

Simple question, complicated answer.

On one hand Youtube is all about faces and gaming definitely has a lot of face cam. Channels like Markiplier, Pewdiepie and many, many others show that face cam is super important and attracts lots of viewers.

On the other hand face cam requires way more work, a camera that can record crazy lengths of footage, syncing, lighting, editing, etc. It also obstructs part of the game which I was never really a fan of. While channels like Game Grumps prove that it's possible to have a face cam less channel, it may just be because they're internet personalities. And there's definitely few channels such as Game Grumps.

So is it the work worth the face cam? Is there any way that a face cam can be done easily? Is there no hope for gaming channels without face cam? Let me know.

Well it only comes to one thing, if you are attractive, it will bring you more subs.
If not, you will be facing the awful internet crowd who will bash you about your face.
It all depend on your persona and your self esteem.

Facecam could get you close to your fan, a great way to connect !

No worries. I prefer not to have a facecam, but at the same time if it'll bring a bunch of new people then I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm looking for other opinions so thanks for contributing.

A facecam is one of the few things that gamers can do to make their videos different from others. And I don't mean just adding a facecam makes you different but the way you utilize it (add a border, make it black and white, use effects like retro green monitor, design your background, ...). So for gamers I am definitely pro facecam.

As you all can see in my signature, my channel is doing a giveaway and one of the criteria to be entered is make a suggestion for the channel. Having a webcam overlay to see my reactions was a suggestion given by my viewers so I ordered a Logitech c920. When it arrives and my first video with a facecam has a week or so to marinate I will report back with my two cents. Sorry I'm in the process of this and don't already have the experience under my belt but hopefully i will have some insight for you soon. :(

To me facecams are an instant no whatever the case, but common sense reccomends to use it only for horror games or challenge videos (like a drink for every death, stuff like this)

For me i like facecams, because you can connect with the player more, see their reactions and facial expressions
I know for me if i had a gaming channel id definitely do face cams, my face is very animated and i do use expressions alot when speaking

Also why not do a border/template if you dont want the game to be obstructed

as for syncing,editing and lighting
just start the recording and webcam/camera around the same time
import the footage and sync up a test before hand
Like say 1....2....3 or somthing like that
And lighting is pretty easy for webcams, it dosnt have to be this amazing soft box set up or ring light
and simple desktop light with a florescent bulb will do perfectly well :)

I would suggest doing a Vlog one day when you hit one of your milestones, (E.g your thank you vid for ....... subscribers) and see the comments from there. If there are hardly any negative comments, might be a bad one or two (it is the internet) then put a cam view in your videos. Or you could do afew videos with facecam, say your playing a scary game, people usually expect a face cam when playing a scary game so experiment and try afew videos with it on.

For me, I've never used facecams, just from a moral standing. My train of thought's like, "Well, just because other YouTubers are getting stupid famous using facecams, that doesn't mean that I have to copy them."

As far as getting popular goes, there's plenty of gaming channels making a job out of YouTube without using a facecam, though not to the extent of Pewdiepie.
