Legal situation on cover songs

Are you allowed to sing/ play piano covering popular songs or will it get taken down for legal reasons?

Thanks

You need a written and signed permission (usually a sync license) if you want to legally cover songs.

There are soooo many rules when it comes to covers, I get lost when reading them all
But i think (definitely no sure about it), being partnered helps alot with music channels

You need to contact the record studio. They usually have the depending information on the homepage.

Actually there aren't that many rules if you get yourself a proper permission.
may I politely ask why you always say you need permission when Google has stated that you can share in revenue with cover songs without needing permission?[DOUBLEPOST=1415623114,1415622889][/DOUBLEPOST]

You can upload covers and then most publishers will just give you a Content ID claim and as long as they don't take it down you are fine. This has been stated by the music industry.

Because that only applies to copyright holders who participate in this option plus they may change their opinion at any time.

funny how you say you need to contact the record studio when the record studio has nothing to do with cover songs. It's the publishers that own the words and melodies. Plus Universal Music Publishing has entered into the revenue sharing along with BMG and Warner Chappell. Warner even has their own faq on how they work with YouTube to allow cover songs.[DOUBLEPOST=1415623348,1415623282][/DOUBLEPOST]

I get that they might change their opinion but to be very honest with you when they have I've never gotten a copyright strike just a blocked video.

You are correct. Most times it's the publisher but it depends on the current song and the license information should be to find at the record label's and artist's homepage anyway.

Probably because of the kind of music you use. The amount of people who need help with copyright claims definitely show that it's not save just to upload covers and to hope for the best.
