Just how important is commentary for gaming channels?

RATTLED

I'm the one who knocks.
I've recently been wondering if commentary is actually crucial to success on YouTube. Some of the most successful YouTubers and YouTube videos started from things like montages which had no commentary. I haven't been using commentary as of yet, but I just wondered what the opinion of everyone was on how much of an impact commentary can make, and can you be a big YouTuber without it?

It depends on the channel I suppose. Channels like MKiceandfire does gameplay without commentary and the games he plays are usually new releases so people can see the new game without any distracting commentary. But then some other times its nice to have commentary to break up any parts of the video that arn't so superb. If you choose not to do commentary you gotta be prepared to have lots of intense and high level gameplay to keep viewers interested. Make sure you also have music playing in the background to keep viewers attention. Not too loud but still there so there isn't any long periods of silence. There is plenty of royalty free music out there. Good luck friend :)

I think commentaries are pretty vital for a gaming channel. I mean if you are just putting up gameplay, your video could easily be made by somebody else. Hundreds of people could be making the exact same video as you, which will keep you from standing out. But if you add your commentary/ personality into it? Nobody can replicate that :)
