Is having YouTube comments worth it? Alternatives?

Having comments disabled can be a 'turn-off' for a lot of people. I'd say that you CAN grow without them however, it would be significantly harder. It'd only really be worth turning them off after you have a substantial amount of views and subscribers. For example, TotalBiscuit has his off.

Disabling comments is really a bad idea and is not what YouTube is about.. If someone is so self absorbed that a comment will keep them from making a video.. then they should not be making videos.. Putting yourself out there you know you are going to get feedback good or bad.

Thanks for all the responses. It's a shame that some people are prevented from creating due to the comment section, but that's just life I guess.

How are they prevented from creating? I don't understand that... unless they are preventing themselves from creating because they are afraid of comments.. If that is the case how do they live? I mean Just walking out wearing a shirt might get you a negative comment if someone doesn't like it...

I live for the comments. Subs and likes are fine, but I want feedback, or opinions, agree of disagree. It's a bummer trying to talk about something scandelous or contraversial and ask for thoughts and opinions whether for or against.... and have noone comment back...

The comments section on my videos are one of my major motivators, however it's my subscribers that make it such a wonderful place.

There is one simple reality that everyone, on and off youtube, need to realise; that is your never going to please everyone, there will be people who just won't like you. It can be hard to accept for anyone.

At this stage I would not consider removing comments from my videos, however I understand why people like PewDiePie have and if I were faced with a similar situation I might consider doing the same!

I think the high interaction is part of what makes youtube, seperates it from Tv,if you are really bothered you can blacklist certain words but i think it is fine as it is where the user can decide whether or not to have them

I think if they want to disable their comments fine, but you just have to realize the likely result it will have. Comments are useful and in my experience most of them are nice and useful. I'm not a big youtuber, by any means, but I've received little to no hate. I think it's best to leave them on, but if you're a very sensitive person maybe it's best to leave them off. To be honest though, if you're that sensitive, maybe performance and creation aren't a good fit for your personality.
