Is Commentary necessary for Gaming videos?

I'm planning on posting videos on YouTube as well as streaming on Twitch but I'm not really confident enough to do a commentary and I don't have a microphone either.

At first I just want to post replays of some of my games on Smash Bros. as well as stream me playing smash bros while vs'ing people watching.

So yeah is it still possible to making entertaining videos that people would watch without having commentary or should I just give up now?

If you think you can go for it, but it wouldn't hurt to invest and try. I found a studio qaulty microphone and headset that were a good deal on amazon, blue snowball is it's name.

Depends on the style of video. Showing off short but random bugs/glitches, random killstreaks etc... don't need commentary as much as a let's play. Walkthroughs can be done without commentary but if there's commentary you really need to know what you're talking about, I mean your walkthrough needs to be developer-walkthrough standard. Streaming on Twitch isn't entirely meant for non-commentated stuff unless it's things like Dota, LoL & maybe CoD/BF, you can get away with that because people expect you to focus if you're playing seriously or if you're playing in a tournament, although the streams are normally done by the venue/hosts.

If you plan to monetize it you will have to add commentary, it's what makes it 'fair use" apparently. Otherwise it's not considered original material.

I like to watch (and listen) to gamers play games, adds a unique twist on just watching random gameplay, otherwise. Sometimes, though, it's not necessary - as with music-based gaming.

I've done many where the music is the star and me talking through it would make little creative sense. ;)

They will be fine as long as the publishers permit it.

Which reminds me; if it's a Nintendo 1st party or published game; I'd stay right away from any producing videos related to it.

For more entertainment wise i would recommend adding in commentary because there are a lot non-commentated gaming videos out there that just arent very entertainment and boring at times :/ so commentate if your feeling up for it as it would help keep the viewer entertained :)

I second blue snowball, it's the mic that I use right now and it's wonderful! Mine is the desktop microphone that is literally a giant white ball!

if you have a problem commenting on the game you are playing, try and skype some one while you play for a while then eventually just cut the call out of the equation, although you would still need to purchase a microphone.

I've moved this to the strategy / technique forum. :)

My advice: The more you put into your YouTube videos and channels, the more you'll get out of it. Good luck.
