Images, Photoshop, and Rights

Hello everyone,

I know that copyright law only applies to a picture the way it is up to a point. My question is how much do I have to change a picture for it to become my own? Will a simple change of colors do or does it have to be completely unrecognizable? And also, if I use parts of many pictures (without changing them) to create my own, new composition, is that legal or not??

Thank you for your help.

I'm not really sure, but in Google Images, you can set it so that all of the images that show up are able to be modified or used commercially. Then you don't have to worry about copyright.

I suggest you only use images that are Royalty free or the creator has allowed Commercial use, also I consider YouTube banners and thumbnails "personal" use.

Oh, really? How would I go about making google only show me royalty free pictures and images?? (Sorry to be so oblivious!!)

Oh, really? How would I do that? (Sorry to be so oblivious!!)

1) Search for something in Google Images
2) Look for the gear icon in the upper right (under your profile pic)
3) Click then click on "Advanced Search"
4) Scroll down to the bottom option which will say "Usage Rights" and pick the appropriate one

If I wasn't clear enough, I can elaborate more if you'd like. Good luck ^_^

Sometimes the obvious things are harder to find. ;)

Click on your nice little gear on the Image search page (on the bar under the search bar, to the right), then click "Advanced Search" and then scroll down to "usage rights" and click the appropriate one. :)[DOUBLEPOST=1398295054,1398295028][/DOUBLEPOST]

How dare you post just seconds before me while I'm typing.

Lawlz. I know, I saw that and started laughing :p

Umm...Okay, one more question, once I have that picture, and I'm using it, if youtube asks me for proof of rights, what do I send/do? (And I'm sorry that you both typed for me! here, have cookies!! *hands cookies*)

P.S. I am SO excited that it's not passover anymore, because I can have cookies again :D

In my experience, if they specifically marked an image being a certain copyright status, they'll list it somewhere on the site. It's usually at the bottom of the page or clarified in the About page or FAQ's, etc. Just check before you use it and definitely bookmark the site in case you need to find it later.
