If You Have a Full Time Job, How Do You Balance It With Youtube?

Hey Everyone,

As someone who has a fulltime job and a wife as well as a Youtube channel that generally posts everyday Monday through Friday, I wanted to know if anyone else on here is balancing a fulltime job or responsibility in addition to their channel. If so, how do you manage the time doing so? :D

(Hoping to find some tips I never thought of before that could help me balance everything on my end)

I don't commit to a schedule so I'm not pressured to post videos. I only shoot and create videos when I get an idea or just whenever I feel like it. I think this weekend I'll do a video I've been meaning to do for 2 weeks now but have never got around to it yet... I've brainstormed my ideas already, I just need to execute the idea. That's another thing, I brainstorm my videos while I'm working and especially on my drive to and from work, my commute is about an hour each way. You just need to multitask and not pressure yourself too much. I used to work full time AND go to school full time and still managed to find time to create videos. It's rough, you just have to prioritize what you do when you have free time.

I try to do one video per week sometiimes its every two weeks. I'm not on a strict schedule. But what I do is work on my video a little bit each day and as I get closer to when I wanna post it I really crunch down and finish it up to upload. I think what I would like more time to do is promote I dont have much time for that, so what I started to do anytime I have like 5 minutes to spare I'll quickly go in social media and promote my video. You just really have to use up your spare time really well.

That's definitely something I honestly haven't thought of, brainstorming ideas on the way to and from work (my commute is unfortunately an hour and half almost). Sometimes, I've felt like I need to do even two uploads a day because I was just starting out (and still am) and wanted to stand out/grow my channel. I'm pretty thankful my wife puts up with and supports me doing YT nonetheless. I do really like your brainstorming idea! I feel that it's something that I've needed to do because I worry so much about uploading that I haven't really even thought of a schedule or when to release certain videos or anything.

I actually have a full-time work.. I balance not setting a deadline for my uploads ^^
Sometime I don't pubblish for weeks, sometime I record but not pubblish or export and not pubblish, hehe..

Then, I publish every week but only If I have something prepared before... It's difficult that I record and publish on the same day............

That's very true. I've been pretty unorganized as of late because I'm constantly thinking about 4 - 5 different things at once. I do want to build myself up to a point where I can reduce my uploading to 2 to 3 times a week though in the long run. However, that almost brings me around to a different topic in that, how much should a small channel upload or work in order to grow. Thank you by the way for replying to my thread![DOUBLEPOST=1449685413,1449685007][/DOUBLEPOST]

I hear you. I usually record a lot in bulk on the weekends, due the content that my channel focuses on, but it definitely takes a lot of time for me to edit and publish (usually on the same day) as well :/

I have a set schedule of 3 uploads per week. I find it helps immensely to film as far in advance as I can, though it's really tough to do that sometimes. The weekends are really helpful for that, so if I can get two out of three of the videos recorded before the end of the weekend, I'm happy. Editing can happen at night, on the couch. It can be a real race to post day, though, and sometimes my video quality suffers for it.

Well there you go, that's an hour and a half where you are alone with your thoughts. I find that it helps to not be blasting Slipknot sometimes and just rolling the windows down to hear the sound of outside. It helps to have a smart phone where you can tell it to create a note so you don't forget an idea by the time you arrive to work or home, typing into your phone is not the safest thing to do while driving!

That's what I've been doing mainly over the past month. Recording in bulk on the weekends and editing and publishing during the week. However, I too sometimes run into trouble editing because I feel racing to keep consistent with my channel despite a particular day being busy or not. I used to record daily during the week and I'll definitely admit that the Mrs wasn't too happy with that for long.[DOUBLEPOST=1449687944,1449687609][/DOUBLEPOST]

That makes a lot of sense. I have to take a bus and two trains to work (the pains of living in New York City). I should use that note app on my phone though, especially since its hard to write on a crowded train. I appreciate your feedback on the topic so far and it's really helped me out in finding ways to improve my current system of doing things.

I'm not sure exactly how often small youtubers are supposed to post but the advice I was given is to post often and be consistent. I'm not sure what "often" means, personally I think daily is way too much. Even when the famous youtubers post daily I rarely watch them everyday but I'm not sure maybe that helps with the youtube algorithm?
