If you enable Monetization, how easy is it to disable it?

I want the custom thumbnail option for my channel, but the button has not yet appeared, even though my channel has been upgraded to the new look. Some non-partners seem to get the thumbnail option with the new look, while others don't.

From what I understand, some people are seeing the custom thumbnail option appear after enabling monetization. I don't want ads on my videos, but I'd like to try enabling monetization briefly to see if I can fast track custom thumbnails.
How easy is it to disable monetization afterwards? Or are you essentially stuck with it? I know you can disable monetization for each individual video, but that's not the same as reverting to pre-monetization status.

From what I've read, you get the custom thumbnail option when your channel reaches 5000 total views. That hasn't been confirmed though, I think.

Monetization can be applied to all of your videos at once but can't be disabled for all your videos at once.

I have more than 5000 views. I don't mind monetizing a less-popular video (as long as there aren't any other drawbacks or obligations). Though I'd prefer to have the option to cancel monetization altogether.

We're having a similar situation. We have been able to add custom thumbnails in the past to our videos but cannot today.
