If I disable monetization will...

Will anything happen if I use a copyrighted song and disable monetization?

I have a video currently that I cannot make money on because of a song I was playing in the background. Another time I put up a video clip of an SNL sketch to illustrate a point and it told me this video will not be shown in certain countries and will not be shown in the search results. Beyond that, I don't know.

I recall reading youtubes policies/terms of use where they stated that its dependent on the company/person giving the claim if they will they will share the revenue with you(if you monetize), take all the revenue to themselves and possibly deny access from it in some countries but if worst comes to worst it will be taken down. Go to edit your video and their should be a tab where reads copyright. Details of how the copyright claimant is going to act reads there!

I would suggest searching through YouTubes music policy database to determine the current status of using the copyrighted songs in question:
youtube.com/music_policies

Note that the status can change at any time without notice, which is why there is a lot of hesitation from YouTubers about copyrighted music. Also, I believe the policies are different based on which country you live in.

If the song isn't listed in YouTube's database as a song that can be used, then the original copyright holder may take action if they find their music being used in a video without permission. Not monetizing a video doesn't make it okay to use songs...

I would not use any copyrighted music in your videos. Just because some record labels don't do anything, others might, so I would just stay away from using any copyrighted material. Just go with royalty free music to be safe...

Depending on the song you choose, you'll get caught the second you upload by ContentID and then will have to face whatever automated option they chose...likely having your video monetized and all earned income going to them, but there's also the chance that your video will be pulled from certain countries or muted entirely.

Just wanted to second the other comments that have pointed out that Content ID/content matches operate automatically, regardless of if you monetize or even if your video has gone public. Copyright owners are entitled to control their copyright and be compensated for it, so even if you're not monetizing, they have the option either to monetize, or to block the video

Right, I had a copyrighted song on my video and the owners monetized that video but I was able to keep it on my channel! If you think that, that music is the only possible music for your video than maybe use it!

Yes. I would steer clear of any material protected by copyright laws.
Because there is plenty of great music and other material available that is copyright free on the internet that you can use. That way you won't have to worry about the consequences your channel may suffer as a result of utilizing music protected by copyright. But I agree, definitely do your research.Best of luck!

What happens will depend on what the company/artist of the specific song wants to happen. Some companies will want to have the video muted or taken down, whereas others just want to monetize the video and will place adds on it without wanting it taken down or muted. Whether or not you think that is worth it is up to you, but most songs usually have copyright free (and royalty free) remix versions available that you can consider using instead of the actual song.
