If nothing is coming out of the preview window and/or nothing comes out when your video is exported (meaning it is created into a video which will allow you to actually use it) then maybe you will need to look up some iMovie tutorials.
For starters, iMovie has a very basic way of organizing your work (pictures, videos, audio etc.). It splits it into events (which are basically where all imported materials go, and into a project, which is where you work on the actual video.
To make sure you are doing everything correctly, just go ahead and File -> new project and name that and start fresh.
Then, from the events (usually on the bottom by default but there is a button to flip them) you can drag and drop select clips / pictures into the top part, which is your project. Due to how iMovie imports clips and pictures, this should all be pre-rendered, and you can play it back instantly to know that you are on a roll.
The far right hand box is your 'media' bar, and it is from here where you can drag and drop in some audio for your intro. iMovie comes pre-loaded with sound effects, but I'm sure you won't want to use those, so go to your iTunes library (in the same window, click around) and find a song you want, and then drag it into your project (it should wrap your project with green border).
You now have a very simple intro!
If you would like you can add transitions between each picture to make them flow between. My advice would be either 'fade to black' or 'fade to white' because most of iMovie's transitions are pretty unprofessional.
As for what you said about not creating anything too good, iMovie is a video editor, so it really isn't built for this kind of work. Like I said before, AAE and Cinema 4D can make great intros.
Good luck!
