How to use music in videos?!

Sarah Muscutt

I've Got It
Many of my very favorite youtubers like itsjudytime, and bubzbeauty use awesome music in their videos (bubz uses music from my fave kdramas!), so I know there must be a way to use GOOD copyrighted music other than what is available on the youtube audio bank and in iMovie itself but for the life of me I cannot find a way of going about it.

The only tutorial I could find somewhat vaguely talked about using sites like HFA Songfile and other media production companies to locate who holds the rights and then contact that party. But, this seems like the most difficult way to go about it and not something feasible for FOREIGN music that because of language barriers and differences between the web in different countries can be impossible to get permission from the holders of the rights to the music.

If so many youtubers use music in their videos (even cover whole songs) then there HAS to be a simpler way!!!!

Please help! This is so far my biggest hurdle in starting up my youtube "career" as you will, and it's really important to me because if I can figure this out not only will I feel like much less of a newb, but my videos will also enter a whole new league.

Thank you in advance for your support and input ^_^

You cant use copyrighted music, period. However there is a thing called Royalty Free Music that you are free to use. There are a lot of channels that give it out, and websites too. For Styles from Jazz to more country guitar sound.

If you can contact and get permission then you can use the music. But like you said that's very hard to do. The best thing is to use royalty free music, or look for remixes/covers of the song. covers are not copyrighted (usually) so they're pretty safe, and I've never heard of a remix being claimed by copyright...

Thanks for your comment first of all!

The main thing I am focused on right now is trying to figure out how to use FOREIGN specifically ASIAN music from kdramas and animes that I like in my videos, which probably aren't in any of the royalty free lists. Plus, some people mentioned elsewhere on the forum that royalty free music isn't necessarily safe, and I've also been given the impression that neither are covers and remixes as long as the song is recognizable...however that may be false as I haven't exactly been looking in great places for my information.

I wish I could actually just get a hold of one of the pros I know of who do this and that they would actually ANSWER my question...although I realize they are bombarded.

Any other ideas specifically about foreign music? Is it included in the royalty-free and free music sites?

And what if I want to use a SPECIFIC song. I have some in mind already that I'm dying to use, and I just feel gagged not being able to :stomp:

I use Fullscreen's music libraries for my music most of the time. It's nothing that you will hear on the radio, but it's still awesome. If you look at any of my timelapse, slow motion, or mountain biking videos they mostly all have music in them if you want to see the quality.

Covers don't remove the copyright and they are still derivatives of the original work. I have seen multiple cover and remix videos being removed for copyright reasons. They may be harder to detect by YouTube's content ID system but they are surely not safe to use.

Interesting! I wasn't aware of this!

That's Content ID Melody Match in action. Also have heard of music publishers actively seeking out unauthorized covers and reporting manually.

The thing is, as you said, your favourite youtubers are famous. If they're famous it's just way easier to get permission for something, so if you want a specific song in your video, get famous first ;)
