How to get started with special effects

I have no clue how to do them, what program should I use and what tutorials should I watch?
I use Vegas Pro 11 for the editing.

Just search with the keywords "Sony Vegas 11 effects tutorial". There's a lot of tuts out there and try to search here in the forums.

Nope don't use Sony Vegas, you should use Adobe After Effects I started out doing all of Andrew Kramers tutorials (www.videocopilot.net). He is one of the best special effects person and video editor in the world, he was won many awards and done effects for many movies, he makes his tutorials simple yet have a large impact I think he has around 200 of them.

Look for overlays on google and check fx tab for a few plugins

definetly after effects is the way to go man i`m trying to start with it now

Don't do any effects in an editing program, learn the difference between compositing and editing.

Learn a compositing application (After Effects is the easy one), learn tracking (point tracking inside of After', planar tracking using mocha built in After' , 3D tracker using whatever. After effect has a 3D tracker but it's not that good for advanced shots, I recommend PFTrack 2011 and +).
