How to get permissions to use a song in your video?

Okay, two questions:

a. Okay, I'm sure some of you are familiar with KaraokeParty.com. I was planning on filming myself singing some songs on there. Could that get me a copyright infringement, or no? Am I allowed to use that music in my videos, even though the original artist does not sing?

b. How do I get permission to use actual songs with the actual singer singing? I see some videos on Youtube have them, and it's not VEVO or some music channel. How do they get permission for those?

I am not sure for A. but for B, They most likely get the permission through their partner program, many partners offer songs and covers as monetizeable features on YouTube.

Any one you can get written or digital permission from is good. If your with adsence they will shoot and ask questions later

a. You're unlikely to get copyright strikes. At worst, your video will get caught by Content ID and the publisher will put ads on your video. This is pretty much a cover of a song, so the most important thing to remember is that you cannot monetize these videos. If you're willing to do a little legwork, you can try to obtain a mechanical/compulsory/synch license from the publisher to have permission to sing and monetize covers, but it's probably not worth it unless you're really popular.

b. My guess is that you'd have to buy a license from the publisher. I'm also guessing it's not cheap. The videos you see on YouTube are either from official channels of artists/publishers, OR the artist/publisher of the particular song have Content ID enabled and allow the videos to remain on YouTube in exchange for putting ads on those videos to collect ad revenue.

Alright thanks, that's what I was assuming for a. I'm not worried about getting ads placed on the video, I'd be fine with that, I just don't want copyright strikes. I think I'll just risk it and put it up anyway. And as for b, yeah I was just curious, I don't think I'm willing to buy a license from the publisher :P
