how to edit MTS files

I've Got It
So, i've bought myself a new camera. It works great, however it saves itself as MTS files. Currently I'm used to editing in premiere from adobe cs master collection, but it does not accept MTS files, because when I import them, it only plays the images but not the sound. So i've tried editing it in iMovie, but I find this program frustrating to work with.

Does anyone have an other editing program that accepts MTS files and has a bit more professional/easier workflow? I'm working on a Macbook pro, so suggestions for mac are appreciated :)
 
MTS are files produced from a Sony Camcorder if I recall correctly, right?
Most professional editors should be able to import MTS files, but they are also expensive, have you tried converting the file to .mp4 through programs like Handbrake? Should do the trick, and you can also compress files to save space on the hard drive.
 
No I haven't tried converting them yet. I just found it curious that premiere doesn't offer assistance to MTS files since it's often used by professional editors.
 
MTS is an extended video format developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic. It gives higher quality than the previous formats, but unfortunately not many editors support it. For example the MTS files from my Sony camera are opened properly with all the included information inside, only by Vegas and no other software that I've tried. And I tested many so called "professional" and no so professional editors including iMovie, CyberLink Power Director, Camtasia. converters etc. Converting the files will reduce their quality, so your best bet is to use Vegas. If you can't afford Vegas, check if your camera supports writing to other formats. Some professional cameras allow wiring to uncompressed format, which is the best of the best for any recording.
 
Frustrating part is that I work on a Mac and Son Vegas Pro does not work on that. I've looked on how I could install it on mac, but it's a frustrating process. I'll look into how I can use those files in an other editor then :)
