How to choose render settings?

Hi All,
I'm just learning the video editing thing and trying to figure out why- When I render my video as an .mp4 in Sony Vegas, The still shots are fine but the video portion of the finished file has black borders on top and bottom. I'm sure it's a render format vs. the format the video was shot in issue.
It was shot in MVI_1172
My project properties are set at HDV 720-30p (1280x720, 29.970 fps)
For starters, it's probably wrong to set it up as HD, (please advise), since it wasn't shot in HD, But what would be the correct project, and render settings be to get rid of this problem?
Also, not sure why I'm unable to upload this video to this forum??
Thank You

i can only think it was shot in a non-16:9 ratio, i know one of my cameras does it with sidebars, u sure you're not recording in 16:10? that would cos black bars on the top and bottom if rendered in 16:9

Not sure. Shot with a little cannon point & shoot. Most of my future vids will be shot with my DSLR T-2i.
But isn't there a render setting to accommodate this?[DOUBLEPOST=1349386729,1349383748][/DOUBLEPOST]OK I figured it out- I chose a different .mp4 render setting in Sony Vegas and all is good. First try was rendered in Main Concept AVC/AAC .mp4
The second rendering was done in Sony AVC .mp4 which allowed me to select 1280 x 720 which is what the video was shot in. I also realized when checking the camera settings that is was in fact shot in 1280 x 720 HD so I kept the project settings at HD
