I have a video that got 50,000 views on August 4th, and it only earned me $32. Is it possible that the average view duration affects the earnings a lot? The video was 5 minutes long, getting around an average of 3 minutes watch time.
I believe view duration only affects earnings when the view was too short to play an ad. You would need to see how many of those 50,000 views were monetized to get an accurate picture of your CPM. As an aside, 3 out of 5 minutes is not bad at all.
The duration doesn't matter at all. It's about the ads. Only with those you will earn money. It really depends what people do.
Most just skip the ad after 5s which gives you the least amount of cash. Then there are a few who watch it through (the ones who are actually interested in the ad or are just not aware that you can skip it) which gives you a bit more. Then there are the ones who have adblock installed. This prevents the ad from even running and you won't earn cash with those kinds of viewers at all. You will also earn no money if the viewer closes the video before the ad was at 5s I think (which will still give you a view).
You might get the same amount of views on other videos but it's quite possible that you earn less or even more with that one.
A dollar for every 2000 views is pretty typical.
Yeah, not what you were expecting out of YT, huh? Most big YTers rely on merchandising to get them by.

First off, congrats on those 50,000 views! Wish I could get that
Second, 3 out of 5 minutes is pretty good. Keep in mind that the ads are where you earn $, not the duration. Say 1/2 people actually watch the ad without skipping it. Right away we divide those views by 2. But in real life, more than half skip the ad. Way more. So around 30$ would be where your $ would be, but keep up the nice videos!!
