Becoming partner doesn't do anything but enable you to brand your channel and help you achieve monetary gain. Other than that, if no one watches your videos before you became partner, it will most likely stay that way when you do. You have to make your content worthy of viewing. Just as simple as that.

I can't really say because I'm not a partner. But I'd say that it gives you the ability to customize more. OTher than that, continue advertising yourself.

As a fellow non-partner it appears that I would have to agree with you. But as a no-partner we have the same work ahead of us with less customization. It's all about elbow grease and promotion.
