How many fonts should I have?

Lilikoi Juice

I do all my own graphics!
I wasn't too sure where to put this thread. This is a question about fonts for people who do graphics and possibly marketing ads.

Ideally, how many fonts--commercial-use OK--should I have in my font library?

I always feel like I don't have enough fonts; maybe I don't. I currently have about 60 commercial-use fonts in my library. Is this not enough? I have over 230 fonts but of those, roughly 60 are commercial-use OK.

As many as you'll need/use. Some people have thousands, some hundreds. Deepens on your needs. Another tip I'd give you is try not to use too many different fonts in your designs. 2, 3 max across all of your thumbnails/banners to make it seem clean and pro. Vice for example only use 2 fonts. Gives you more of an identity that way ^^

I wouldnt install too many, it slows down Windows loading up as well as programs which use them like Photoshop. I would say install as many as you want but never install way too many at once. I once had a disc from a friend when I was about 15 and I installed maybe 3000 fonts, if I remember correctly I couldnt get back into Windows :D Me personally I have about 100 installed at present.

I've got hundreds! I do a lot of graphics work though so I normally need different fonts for different projects otherwise clients and tutors think my work looks the same.
I downloaded a pack of around 300 commercial use fonts for something like £50 a few months ago and I use dafont to find free to use fonts, of which I've downloaded a few hundred! I just go down the popular list and hit download on all of them. I only install ones that I'm using though and then I un-install them and keep them saved on my hard drive so I can install them again if I need them. I don't like my font library to be full of random downloaded fonts.

That is a good idea to uninstall it after you're done using it for a project!

The only thing I'm worried is forgetting that I had that font since it won't show up on my font library, haha. One of the reasons I have a small selection of fonts is also because I hate clutter... I supposed I'll buy a pack of fonts again to add to my collection. I don't want 300 but I definitely want more, haha.

When I do a client project I scribble stuff in my note book like where their folder is and what font I used so I know what I need to take out of my library and put in their folder when I'm done.
I've started doing this for my own graphics now as well :)

That's true! I've been doing that with my personal graphic stuff too, but when I see new fonts, I can't help but reconsider my previous font decisions...

Having too many fonts hinders the progression of your projects too, haha... Sometimes I spend hours deciding on what font to use. I'm a bit too picky in that sense![DOUBLEPOST=1393071691,1393071444][/DOUBLEPOST]

Oh, wow... That's a bit too much for me; I would end up losing the information. :facepalm2:

I'll definitely have to start looking into something more organized when I have a lot more fonts like you do! :wink2: When did you start that organization method? I only have 200-ish total so I don't have too much of a problem when it comes to clutter.
