How important is it to show your face in videos?

So a friend of mine watched some of my videos (I have a gaming channel) and he suggested I get a facecam to show my reactions while playing. He said he feels like it would bring something extra to the videos. My question is, how important is it for a creator to show their face in videos, gaming or otherwise? Is it vital to do in order to build a connection with your audience?

For the longest time I didn't show my face at all, and In still don't in most of my videos.I don't feel like it is vital but it definitely adds something. You can have top quality videos without face cam and grow just fine!

I wouldn't say it's necessary but like you said, it might make it easier for your audience to form and build a connection with you. I personally don't really care for any straight gameplay videos unless I'm watching it to learn about secrets or something that I might have missed. Unless your editing is top notch (dunkey), then I would rather see the face behind the gameplay.

An alternative is facerig , I think they have an add on for 2D characters as well. So you have a webcam but they do not see you .

I think it is important. It gives people a face to remember. Now, if you were to make it big on YouTube you'll end up not being able to go anywhere without being recognized. But that's the risk you take. I personally was incognito in the beginning, but then did a face reveal. After that my channel transformed, and even though I am no 10/10 I feel I wouldn't be where I am now without showing my face.

It depends on the kind of videos you produce, but if you are producing vlogs, reviews, tutorials, or promoting a product or service then I think the viewer would rather see your face.

I'm no 10/10 either, but when I started my channel I was inspired by Jeremy Clarkson and Gordon Ramsay. Neither one are particularly good looking, but they speak with passion and conviction so their TV shows are hugely popular.

I would say It depends on the kind of videos you make. I do animation movies and in some of the movies I put a portrait in but not always.

It is a good idea sometimes to let your audience know who you are (and don’t worry about looks here, even though a lot of people do) More to give people an idea of the person behind the channel

I've only seen one highly succesful streamer on twitch who doesn't show his face and that's LIRIK.

So if you are doing gaming my opinion is that you should show face.

I definitely think it would make your videos better if you did show your face and reactions. Markiplier comes to my mind as someone that does this well IMO as I sometimes laugh because of the face he makes, or gameplay, face, voice combination in the video. It definitely gives the gameplay an extra kick that it wouldn't have without it, but that's just my opinion. It can also help express your own personality which is extremely important now that Youtube is saturated with videos.

Yeah I agree. It is no 100% necessary but definitely helps your viewers to make a bond with you. They see your reactions and put a face to the voice. So the odd and end things where you don't show your face, they can still imagine it.
